Leather book cover with gold leaf decoration on spine?
Near complete book cover comprising front and back sections with gold leaf decoration on spine. Measures 158mm by 118mm by 1mm thick. The cover is only slightly worn as it has been well preserved in the anaerobic soil condition, although it has a rip leading from the spine to the back cover. The front cover also has extra protection with a thin fragment of wood added to the opening end and folded over fabric at the top.
The decoration on the spine comprises four rectangular patterns with floral motif inside and circle in the centre. There is no writing on the cover to suggest the text inside. The object was discarded in the Renaissance period in the 1600s.
