Bellahøjhusene introducerede den berømte arkitekt Le Corbusiers teorier om koncentreret bebyggelse med højhuse for at bebygge landskabet mindst muligt. Planlægningen af højhusbebyggelsen blev afgjort ved en arkitektkonkurrence i 1944 med Tage Nielsen og Mogens Irming som vindere
